Rahway is a small city that decided to become an arts district and then went and did it. Guests arriving by rail step out downtown rather than into a parking lot, the blocks around the station are walkable, and a restored 1928 theatre anchors the whole thing. For couples whose families are split between the city and central Jersey, that solves a problem money usually cannot.
The theatre is the headline. The Union County Performing Arts Center runs a main house that seats over thirteen hundred and a second, modern stage a few blocks away, and both are rented for ceremonies and private events. It is an unusual room to marry in and it films beautifully, because a building designed to make one lit figure readable from the back row is already doing half of a cinematographer's job.
Around it the city carries the rest of the day. A colonial tavern kept as a museum on St. Georges Avenue, an Italian dining room on Main Street with private space behind it, county parkland along the river when the portraits want green. We film the walking between them, which here is short enough to belong in the film.
Rahway is twenty minutes down the Parkway from the house and a station stop for anyone coming out of the city, so we can cover an early hair and makeup call and still be standing inside the theatre before its doors open.

Can you actually film a wedding inside the theatre?
Yes, and the building helps. The main house on Irving Street is rented for ceremonies and services as well as concerts, and its stage lighting exists to make one person readable from the back of a room holding over a thousand. What gets agreed in advance is who runs the board on the day, because a house lighting cue and a film exposure are two different jobs with two different instincts.
Our guests are taking the train in from New York. What does that do to the schedule?
Mostly it helps, occasionally it bites. A city guest list that comes by rail arrives downtown without a parking argument, but the trains keep their own timetable and a missed one costs real time rather than a couple of minutes. Tell us the intended arrivals early and we keep a camera on the door through cocktail hour, so the late uncle still makes it into the film.
Where do people take portraits here when it is mostly city blocks?
Three places, all inside the city. The brick and the marquee around the theatre give you the downtown look, the tavern museum on St. Georges Avenue gives you old wood and deep shadow, and the county parkland along the river gives you green without a real drive. We choose on the day by the weather and by what the dress wants, not off a fixed list written in January.
We are having a small reception in a restaurant rather than a ballroom. Is that worth filming?
Some of the strongest films this house has made are thirty people at tables pushed together. A private dining room is tight, warm and loud, which suits the way we shoot, and it removes the empty middle a large hall leaves in a short film. We bring less kit, we stand closer, and the toasts land because everybody is already within arm's reach of everybody else.
