East Orange is four square miles that most of the state only sees through a train window. Brick Church and East Orange stations put Midtown about half an hour out the door, which is one reason so many families here keep the wedding at home and let the out of town side come to them. There is no ballroom district. What the city has is halls, parishes and seven municipal parks, and a day here gets built out of those.
That suits the way we work. A hall in East Orange is usually a room the family dresses itself, so the film has to carry the atmosphere the room will not supply on its own. We get in early enough to find where the good light lands, we light for the space we are actually standing in rather than the one a brochure imagined, and we keep the rig small so a full room still feels like a room and not a set.

We are decorating the hall ourselves. Does that change what you can do?
It changes the schedule more than the film. Rooms that families dress are usually still being finished when a videographer would normally be shooting details, so we come in during setup instead, film the room while it is going up, and get the finished frames in the quiet twenty minutes before doors. Tell us your setup window when you book and we will build around it.
Do we need a permit for photographs in Watsessing Park?
Yes. Watsessing is an Essex County park, and the county requires a wedding ceremony and photography permit for any park in its system. Outdoor receptions are not allowed there or anywhere else in county park space. The permits unit is at 115 Clifton Avenue in Newark and the application is worth filing well ahead of the date.
Our ceremony is at the parish and the reception is a few blocks away. How much time should we leave?
More than the map says. The walk between most East Orange addresses is nothing, but a receiving line, photographs on the church steps and a family that wants to talk will absorb half an hour without anybody noticing. We plan for that gap rather than fighting it, and we usually get the best candid footage of the day inside it.
The hall gives us five hours. What does that do to the film?
It sharpens it. A hard out means the first dance, the toasts and the parents' dance all have to sit earlier than they would at a venue with a loose end, so we build the run of show backward from the exit time and tell your DJ where the pressure points are. Nothing important gets cut, it just gets moved forward.
Is there anywhere in East Orange worth shooting portraits?
Yes, and not where people expect. Elmwood Park's track and open ground work at the end of the afternoon, the parish corner at Clinton and Martin Luther King has real architecture behind it, and the older apartment blocks along the avenues give you brick and iron that photograph better than a manicured lawn. We scout your specific block before the day rather than defaulting to a park.
