Montclair has run its own film festival every October since 2012, which means a fair number of couples marrying here already have opinions about camerawork. That is a good problem to have. It shortens the conversation about why we shoot the way we shoot and gets us to the part that matters, which is what the day actually looked like from the inside.
The town sits on the first Watchung ridge, and that is why the skyline keeps turning up in the background. The MC Hotel makes the most of it from the roof. Everything else here trades on a different kind of altitude: an art museum with a real collection, a restored theatre downtown, and estates on the north end built back when this was where Manhattan money came to sleep.
Montclair hands you more options than any one wedding can use, so a lot of our planning here is subtraction. Can we get married at Van Vleck House and Gardens?
No, and this catches people out every season. Van Vleck rents to non profit organizations rather than to private parties, and what it offers weddings is a paid photography permit capped at a small group, roughly two dozen people. Treat it as a portrait stop between locations rather than as a venue, and confirm the current terms with them directly before you build a timeline around it.
What about Presby Memorial Iris Gardens for portraits?
The gardens are a volunteer run living museum and they ask that photography be cleared with them ahead of time, so it is a phone call rather than a walk on. Worth knowing that the iris bloom is a narrow spring window. Outside it you are shooting a pretty hillside, not the thing the gardens are famous for.
The Montclair Women's Club kitchen is warming only. Does that affect the film?
It affects your timeline, and the timeline is what shapes the film. Warming only means your caterer cooks offsite and the hot service window narrows, which compresses cocktail hour and pushes toasts earlier than couples expect. We put portraits ahead of that squeeze rather than inside it.
The Wellmont holds over two thousand people. Can it work for a wedding of 150?
It can, but the room reads empty on camera unless the plan deliberately shrinks it. That usually means keeping everyone on the floor, using the stage as backdrop rather than seating the balcony, and lighting a pool rather than the whole house. We shoot tight for most of the night and let the scale of the building arrive in a handful of wide cutaways.
Is October a hard month to get married in Montclair?
It is the prettiest and the most congested. The film festival runs mid to late October and downtown parking and hotel rooms move accordingly, so if your date lands in that stretch, block guest rooms early and give us an extra fifteen minutes on every crosstown transfer.
