Can we get portraits at the Great Falls?
Ask the park first, and ask this year. As of this writing Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park states it may not be issuing permits for small weddings and wedding photos, while commercial filming and still photography carry their own fees by group size. Policies at national parks change, so we confirm the current position for your date before it goes on the shot list.
What about Lambert Castle on the ridge?
Same answer, different office. Wedding photography, drone flights, professional filming and any gathering over fifteen people on the grounds all need a permit from the Passaic County Department of Cultural and Historic Affairs, and the historical society is not accepting permit requests until further notice. If your date is far enough out it is worth an email to them, because the position may change.
Our ceremony is at the Cathedral. What should we ask them?
Call the parish office early, because they ask couples to contact them as soon as they decide to marry and before other arrangements are made. When you do, ask what a videographer is allowed to do during the rite and where cameras may stand. Send us the answer and we work to it exactly, without renegotiating anything on the day.
We are having a traditional ceremony and a white wedding. How do you cover both?
As two events, because that is what they are. Two rooms, two changes, often two guest lists and two very different energies, and a single camera trying to be everywhere ends up with half of each. We plan the hours and the second shooter around whichever parts your families will look for first, and we say upfront what a given budget can and cannot carry.
Do the mills and the raceways work on camera after dark?
Better than most people expect, but only with light you brought. The industrial stone holds a highlight beautifully and the water gives you movement for free, while the ambient light down there is uneven and much dimmer than the eye reports. If you want night frames in that part of the city we plan them as a short scheduled stop with our own key light rather than an improvisation on the way to the reception.
