Most weddings here happen in rooms the family already knows, booked months out by somebody's cousin who knows the manager.
Those rooms come with rules, and the rules shape the film more than the decor does. The county community center closes at nine on a Saturday and seven on a Sunday, no outside tables or chairs come through the door, and alcohol needs its own permit filed weeks ahead with insurance behind it. The community center has a hard stop. How do you build around it?
By working backward from it. County rules end a Saturday event at nine and a Sunday at seven, and everything, including your cleanup, has to be out inside the hour after. So the first dance, the toasts and the cake move earlier than they would at a hotel, and we walk your DJ through the order the week before rather than discovering it live.
Do we need a permit to take photographs in Irvington Park?
Yes. Irvington Park belongs to the Essex County system, and ceremonies and photography there run on a county permit issued by the parks permit unit in Newark. Outdoor receptions are not permitted in county park space at all, so the park is a ceremony and portrait location rather than a reception one.
Do you film Nigerian, Ghanaian and Caribbean weddings?
Yes. We plan them as what they are, which is often two events in one weekend rather than one long day. A traditional ceremony and a white wedding mean two rooms, two sets of clothes and frequently two guest lists, and covering both properly is a matter of hours and a second shooter, not of squeezing. Our hall does not allow outside tables, chairs or deliveries. Does that affect you?
Only in a good way. It means the room is what it is when we walk in, so we scout it once and know exactly what we are lighting. What it does affect is your vendors, since caterers, decorators and deliveries all have to land inside your rental hours with a family member there to receive them. Build that into the setup window and the day runs clean.
Can you cover a ceremony in Newark and a reception here?
Regularly. Irvington sits right on the Newark line, so the transfer is short, but a Saturday afternoon on Springfield Avenue is never quick. We drive the route in advance, leave the ceremony with the shots already in hand rather than chasing them at the church door, and get to the hall ahead of the couple to set the room before anyone arrives.
